KEVIN DOBRUCK

I am an artist/designer based in Torrance, California. My recent works represent a reinvention of my style and offer a new vision of discovery and exploration.

This particular group of paintings all began as something else. For a period I created art based on others expectations and their desire for clear representation of shared beliefs. I became disillusioned with this (long story) and as a result felt a distance grow between me and previous work. I no longer felt it represented who I am as an artist.

Each of the new pieces is painted over remnants of past works.

I purposely selected paintings that carried unpleasant memories and reminders of situations I regretted. I painted the canvases black, completely obscuring what had come before—keeping in mind each was part of my story, but a part I was moving away from emotionally and artistically. Through the use of contrast, color and texture I tried to capture my journey and mental state over the past six years.

The new artwork represents a period of breaking free, expansiveness and growth beyond self-imposed boundaries.
